How Can You Minimise the Possibility of an Accident when Hauling a Heavy Load?

by Samuel Mills

One of the most challenging tasks to carry out as a driver is hauling a heavy load from one place to the other. The heavier the load, the higher the possibility that the vehicle will be unstable during the move. This makes the vehicle a little harder to control, and if the weather is wet or the visibility poor, it sets you up for possible accidents. However, this does not mean that you should shy away from hauling heavy loads. As long as you put in place the right safety measures, it will be very simple to carry something from one point to another.

Here are three safety tips and guidelines that will maximise your safety when you are doing heavy hauling.

Have You Inspected the Route?

The first thing you should do when planning to move a heavy or wide load is to figure out the shortest and most convenient route. When mapping out the route, think about the weight that is allowed on the road, the height of the bridges and the condition of the twists and turns.

If there are bridges shorter than the height of your load, consider using a diversion or other route. At the same time, when the route has very sharp turns, it might minimise your ability to control the vehicle when you are speeding. Also, check out if you will need overweight permits for the route.

Are You Allowed to Haul It?

The classification of your drivers' licence is what determines what they are allowed to haul by the traffic department. Before you allow someone to carry something valuable for you, also ask to see their licence. Note that you will also suffer in case they got caught up in the bureaucracies that follow a traffic violation. This is because the vehicle might be held, and the traffic department might charge fines.

Have You Secured the Load?

In many instances, the mistake that eventually leads to an accident happens when the load is getting loaded onto the truck. If you want to avoid these mistakes, you have to be present during the process. Check how well the load is secured, and ascertain that it will not wobble or fall off during the move.

These are all safety guidelines that will be easy to follow when you have a competent driver working with you. They will make sure your load reaches the destination on time and without a scratch.
