Tips for Securing an Excavator on a Mini-Excavator Trailer

by Samuel Mills

If you have just landed a job with a heavy haulage company, then you understand that transporting excavators on a mini-excavator trailer is not a job for the faint of heart. This is especially the case if your company is dealing with construction companies that need their excavators transported from one job site to another. The reason for this is that you will be tasked with securing the excavators to the trailers. If you overlook any critical step when securing an excavator to a trailer, you risk causing an accident and damaging the machine. This article highlights vital safety tips to keep in mind when securing an excavator to a mini-trailer.

Keep Bucket Close to the Main Body -- The bucket is one of the essential parts of an excavator. It is also one of the heaviest since it is made of cast iron. Therefore, it matters a lot how you position the bucket when securing an excavator to a trailer. Unfortunately, some operators do not take time to examine the position of the excavator's bucket while it is on the trailer, and such ignorance can be costly. As a general rule, make sure that the bucket is positioned as close as possible to the excavator's body. It ensures that the weight of the entire machine is centrally located, thereby guaranteeing an even weight load. Not only does this prevent the equipment from toppling over, but it also makes driving the trailer a lot easier.

Tie Straps on Smooth Edges -- Tying down an excavator onto a trailer is the best way to ensure security during transportation. However, just because you strap the excavator tightly onto the tie-down points does not mean you are good to start the journey. As you tie down the securing straps around the excavator, check carefully where each strap lays on the excavator. For example, if you secure the excavator's tracks using a belt, note that the edges are sharp enough to cut through the tie-down, especially if you pull tightly. Therefore, always ensure that the straps wrap around on the smooth edges of an excavator trailer.

Clean Trailer Bed and Excavator Tracks -- Debris on a trailer bed or an excavator's tracks is dangerous during transportation. For instance, if there is a rock lodged in the excavator's tracks or on the trailer bed, the equipment will not sit flat during transit. The trailer will wobble about even if you tie it down on the trailer, thereby loosening the straps or chains. Therefore, it is vital first to clean both the excavator and the trailer bed before you loading or securing the machine in place.
