Preparing for a Wine Tasting Tour

by Samuel Mills

Wine tasting tours are perfect social activities that allow you to try different vintages in gorgeous surroundings in the company of friends. However before going on your wine tour there are a few things you can do to help you prepare, to really get the most out of your experience.

Set the Conditions

According to winemag.com (2016) setting the conditions is essential to wine tasting and is the first step in a series of steps. Consider the setting is it loud and distracting? Are you in a comfortable room with a spectacular view? Are you drinking red wine from a champagne glass or vice versa? Anything that doesn't contribute to a positive experience should be rectified so that you can concentrate all of your effort on the tasting.

Eye It Up

Before the glass even touches your lips you must look at the wine. Tilt the glass from different angles, hold it against a white surface in a well-lit room to really see the true colour and swirl it around on the table to see how it clings to the glass. Your guide on the day will provide you with a step-by-step approach on how the differences in colour and how the wine clings to the glass affect the alcohol content and taste.

Give it a Sniff

Smell your wine without swirling it around the glass and try to establish what different flavoursome notes you can identify. Now do it again but this time swirl the wine to see how it changes.

Savour the Taste

A good wine tasting isn't just as simple and drinking bottle after bottle as quickly as you can. It's about using all of your senses to really pick apart the layers of flavour and smell to help you establish whether this is a wine worth drinking. Sip the wine and allow it to swirl around your mouth and touch every part of the tongue. Different sensors respond differently to sour and sweet tastes and so this will allow you to really grasp all of the flavours jumping out. At this point you can spit or swallow the wine, however be careful not to drink too much too soon.

Words Escape Me

Don't worry if you can't think of any fancy words to describe the taste and smell. The fun comes from being with friends in a beautiful location tasting good wines. If it helps look at some wine reviews before you go to give you a better grasp of wine tasting vocabulary or better still have a practice evening at home with friends.
