Why temperature zoning is a key consideration

by Samuel Mills

Refrigerated transport serves a similar role whether the product is meat, poultry, produce, flowers, ice cream, or seafood- to keep cargo at the exact temperature that's appropriate for the recipient. Anything less than that would be ruinous. For restaurant owners who often require refrigerated transport, they can either buy their own refrigerated truck or simply hire a refrigerated transport company. Because hiring is cheaper than buying a refrigerated truck, restaurant owners opt for the hiring alternative. This article looks at temperature zoning—a key aspect restaurant owners should take into account when hiring a specific refrigerated transport company.

Temperature zoning

The topic of temperature zoning comes into the limelight if you need to transport several types of food freight in the same truck and each type of freight has its own unique temperature zone. In other words, the types of food items you wish to transport is a key factor in the type of refrigerated transport truck you choose. For example, you need a completely different temperature setting for fresh fish compared to some produce. In this case, you can't use a single-temperature refrigerated truck, which has one temperature setting throughout the entire trailer. Otherwise, some of the food products will go bad.

Assuming you plan to transport different cargo with diverse temperature requirements, then you need a refrigerated transport company which offers temperature zoning within its trailer. This type of trailer provides multi-temperature refrigeration during transportation. In its simplest form, consider a refrigerator and freezer combination with a section for perishable produce and another for frozen, as is the case in a kitchen fridge.

From a shipper perspective you basically have several compartments in a single trailer and each compartment boasts of its own temperature setting. Each compartment or temperature zone features an independent thermostat used to regulate the temperature levels within that particular compartment. You can choose a refrigerated truck with existing dividers inside, or you may opt for one with removable inserts so that you can modify the structure of the shipment space.

Bottom line

Temperature zoning is a key feature for restaurant owners who have a wide range of food items that they want to transport from one point to another. Given that the diverse food items have diverse temperature specifications, they can be stored in their respective compartments within the truck's freezing unit for concurrent transportation. From the client's point of view, this is more cost effective than hiring several refrigerated trucks for the transportation task. In the end, a refrigerated transport truck that offers temperature zoning is a better choice for restaurant owners.
