Questions to Ask About Getting Your Car Transported

by Samuel Mills

When moving across the country or for when you're selling a car, it can be good to simply have it transported rather than driven. This can also be good if it needs certain repairs and you want to have it transported a longer distance than a standard tow truck may offer; antique cars, foreign cars, and other such cars may need specialized care that you can only find in another state, and a transport company is a good choice in these instances. Whatever your reasons for wanting to hire them, note a few questions you might ask a transport company before having them manage the move of your vehicle.

1. Ask how to get your car ready for shipment

Emptying your car of sporting goods in the trunk and other such items may be required, so that there is not risk of theft as the car is on the road. You might also be asked to run it out of as much gas as possible, so it's lighter and easier to transport and there is less risk of a gas fire in case of a collision. You might also be asked to turn over at least one set of keys, in case the car needs to be moved for any reason. Be sure you ask about this so you have time to get the car ready for transport before the truck arrives at your location.

2. Ask what paperwork they need

Obviously you would need to provide some type of proof of ownership of the vehicle before you can arrange to have it transported, but the transport company may need a copy of the registration to carry themselves as well as a copy of your proof of insurance. If you're having it transported to a repair facility, they may need paperwork showing that the facility will be accepting it, and they may also need a copy of some type of paperwork showing that you will be moving into a new address if you're having your car moved along with household goods.

3. Ask how they protect your car

If you're not paying for an enclosed trailer that ships your car alone, ask how they will protect it. This might include a type of film that is placed over the windshield of the car and around the body, to keep it safe from dents and dings caused by gravel and other debris when on the road. They should also provide you with the name and address of their secured facility if they need to spend more than one day transporting your car, to ensure it's safely locked away at night.
