Planning for the school camp bus trip

by Samuel Mills

The school camp is a rite of passage for most Australian kids. It starts and ends with a bus trip that can either go really well or really badly. Here are some tips to make sure that the bus trip goes well.

Have a couple of drivers

Even if you have a driver that has a bus license, it can be very tiring to drive a bus if you are not used to driving a very large vehicle, especially if there is a group of noisy and energetic children in the back of the bus. It's a good idea to have a few drivers to rotate through the driving duties, particularly if it's a long haul to your campsite.

Luggage capacity

Children can often want to bring a lot of equipment to the camp, but there will only be a limited amount of storage in the charter bus. You may need some of this space to bring food, educational materials or group supplies so it's a good idea to work out just how much space you'll have left for luggage. You can then ask the students parents to keep the luggage to a certain size so that you have enough space for everyone's gear.

Supervisors

Children can be a little sneaky in getting up to hijinxs at the back of the bus if they aren't monitored. It's a great idea to ask the parents of the group if any of them can come along for the camp so that you have a higher than normal ratio of adults to students. You may need to hire a slightly larger bus to accommodate the students, but this can be well worth it for the peace of mind that the students are all being supervised appropriately.

Breaks and rests

While adults can usually manage a long bus ride with minimal breaks, many students won't be used to taking long drives. This means it can be a good idea to schedule in some very regular toilet breaks as well as time to get fresh air in case anyone is prone to motion sickness. (It's worth asking the parents if their children have been motion sick in the past, so you can sit these kids closer to the front and have some sick bags close by in case the worst happens.)

Good luck in organising your school camp bus trip. Finding the right charter bus and planning your trip can help make it a fun and safe time for all of the students.
